5m³/H Carbon Steel Manganese Sand Filter for Groundwater Iron & Manganese Removal

This system is primarily designed for the removal of iron and manganese from groundwater in regions with high concentrations of these elements, as well as for pretreatment in industrial demineralization and desalination water systems. The equipment operates on the principle of aeration oxidation, manganese sand catalysis, adsorption, and filtration. Through an aeration device, oxygen from the air is dissolved into the water, oxidizing dissolved Fe²⁺ and Mn²⁺ into insoluble Fe³⁺ and MnO₂. These are then effectively removed via catalysis, adsorption, and filtration using natural manganese sand.


Working Principle
When aerated or mixed with an oxidizing agent, iron and manganese ions in groundwater begin to oxidize. As water passes through the manganese sand filter layer, contact oxidation, biochemical reactions, and physical adsorption and entrapment occur on the filter media surface. This process results in the precipitation and removal of iron and manganese ions.
In treating mildly contaminated manganese-containing groundwater, iron bacteria not only contribute to the removal of iron and manganese but also metabolize ammonia nitrogen as a nutrient source. With the involvement of other microorganisms, the system effectively reduces ammonia nitrogen content.


Process Description
Well water is pressurized by a self-priming pump and enters the aeration unit, where it fully contacts atmospheric oxygen. Through oxidation, ferrous (Fe²⁺) and manganous (Mn²⁺) ions are converted into ferric (Fe³⁺) and manganic (MnO₂) ions, which precipitate rapidly.

System Operating Conditions:

1. Single-Stage Filtration
Applicable when iron concentration is 5–10 mg/L and manganese concentration is 1–2 mg/L, or when only iron is present at ≈10 mg/L.

2. Two-Stage Filtration
Recommended for high iron (>10 mg/L) and manganese (>2 mg/L) concentrations.

Groundwater → Deep well pump → Aeration device → Water tank → Filter pump → Primary iron & manganese removal unit → Secondary iron & manganese removal unit → Clean water tank → User
